Healing is a Journey not a Destination

Updated: Apr 4, 2023

I have always been an open book with my clients. I believe having a mentor, someone who has the same experiences as you makes a difference in your life. Whenever a client is struggling with their mental health, I am compelled to share my experiences with them so they don't feel isolated, because mental illness is isolating.

My journey has taken me to levels of despair and hopelessness that I didn't think I would survive, and yet here I am. I found recovery from substance abuse in September, 1986, but did not find a deeper healing until twenty years later. I found that healing to be Reiki. Reiki is Japanese for 'Spiritually guided life force energy' and as soon as I became a certified practitioner, my body, mind, and spirit healed to new levels that never occurred to me could be possible.

Regarding mental health, it's a little different than physical health because there's a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes havoc in a person's life and most people need medication and therapy to help them stay balanced and healthy. Trust me, I have tried the spiritual, organic, and holistic approach to healing my brain completely and reaching out to a Higher Power to also help. In meditation one day I heard a loud, "Take the medications."

Others may argue that I'm a hypocrite pretending to be a healer when I haven't healed myself due to being mentally disabled from the corporate world. However, they forget that I am human and that healing is a journey, not a destination. I suffer at times with triggers and memories from past repeated trauma and I use tools that I learned in therapy, along with Reiki and meditation. Writing in a journal also helps. I have come a long way from where I started. I was in and out of psychiatric hospitals my entire life until my Reiki certification. I haven't been in a hospital since before 2006 and if that's not considered healing, then I don't know what is.

My hope is that people find a healing modality that works for them, whether it's Western medicine or holistic healing, or both. And to also find a sense of humor. Laughter is one of the greatest anditotes to healing body, mind, and spirit. Namaste'
